Read an excerpt from the fourth book in the series:
A small brindle terrier sat on the edge of the road. Whenever a car came by, she perked her ears and stood up. The cars sped by without stopping. She sat back down and waited.
The day passed slowly. She stopped standing and laid with her head on her paws. She felt terribly sad and alone.
This morning she had been happy. Her master had released her from her crate and put her in his car. She loved to ride with her head stuck out the window so she could snap at the wind. She loved the freedom.
But that happy feeling had ended right here. She had been excited when the car stopped and her master lifted her out.
She was confused when he removed her collar and set her down in the ditch.
“Stay!” he said. She stood and watched the car drive away and disappear in the distance.
